About Stephen Hawking
Professor Hawking is one of a few research scientists with broad public
recognition. He is the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics -- the chair once held
by Isaac Newton at Cambridge University. Professor Hawking approaches science with his
belief that we should all be engaged in the dialogue of humanity.
He is a living scientific legend; his first trade book,
A Brief History of Time, is among the most
popular science books of all time, having sold over ten million copies in
40 languages since its 1988 publication.
Serving as the inspiration for a feature 35-mm film in
1992, the book was updated as an
illustrated edition in 1995. Hawking’s work
inspired a 1997 PBS series, also released in video. This media success turned
Hawking into a virtual pop icon; he played himself on Simpsons and
Star Trek episodes. His
The Universe in a Nutshell (2001), an extensively illustrated
book, amplified his cosmology and received the prestigious Aventis Prize for
2002.
